"A key claim of this article is the need for re-politicizing the processes of social change in Mexico, while critically examining economic imperatives as selfinduced enforcement mechanisms. Focusing on the socio-political dimensions of the process, I undertake an analysis of the features of the democratization processes currently under way. It is emphasized that if the latter are to succeed, we need to be aware of the broad transformative effects which they entail. Therefore, the challenge for a more egalitarian and democratic society must be undertaken without delay. It is suggested that network governance could be of great help in drawing up a more democratic agenda, which may open up further possibilities of transformation."

"This article opens with a brief analysis of key features of the Mexican semi-authoritarian regime. It then moves to a discussion of the critical realist positions and features that inform the strategic-relational approach (SRA). Attention is paid to social interactions and causal relations that enable the SRA to trace patterns of punctuated evolution and to highlight the processes of transformation. Since ideal types serve to highlight key characteristics in specifc phenomena, processes and actors, some features of ideal types of the state and of the transition from one type to another are also discussed. In particular, attention is paid to the Keynesian welfare national state (KWNS) and to the Schumpeterian workfare post-national regime (SWPR) ideal types elaborated by Jessop. For it is contended that the specific features of these ideal types could be of great help in broadening the debate on economic restructuring and political reforms in countries such as Mexico. Moreover, the SRA approach provides an insight into the endogenous features of social change and stresses the importance of networking for a strategic agenda as well. For the never-static dynamics of the processes of change the role of situated agents in context is fundamental, as it injects intentionality and acknowledges the contingency of the conditions that surround them".

"The processes associated with the inevitability of globalization are patently not market-driven; there is a social dimension to the so-called economic compulsion. Therefore, neither the globalization discourse nor the general equilibrium model acknowledges the institutional differences and social determinants of markets, because they are presented as homogenous and convergent. The inadequacy of the first generation of economic reforms associated with the Washington Consensus and also of the institutional emphasis of the second generation of reforms of the post-Washington Consensus highlighted a missing social and political dimension. Though their emphases vary and complement each other, no set of reforms acknowledges the vital political character of the situated agents in context, as both generations of reforms are oriented towards the harmonization of policies."

El presente artículo reflexiona acerca de las relaciones entre los procesos de globalización y la integración segmentada de los mercados emergentes internacionales. Se analiza la ocurrencia de dificultades monetarias y financieras serias y críticas en los años noventa en México y el sudeste asiático. Además, se consideran los elementos y las características de las respuestas globales para enfrentar dichas crisis, en un esfuerzo por tomar enseñanzas relevantes de la historia económica reciente.

Este artículo abre con un breve análisis de las características fundamentales del régimen mexicano semi-autoritario. Después pasa a una discusión de las posiciones críticas realistas y las características que informan el enfoque estratégico relacional (SRA). Se presta atención a las interacciones sociales y las relaciones causales que permiten al SRA trazar pautas de evolución y destacar los procesos de transformación. Dado que los tipos ideales sirven para destacar las características clave en fenómenos específicos, procesos y actores, algunas características de los tipos ideales del Estado y de la transición de un tipo a otro son también discutidas. En particular, se presta atención al Estado Nacional de Bienestar Keynesiano (KWNS) y al Régimen Post-nacional Schumpeteriano Laboral (SWPR), tipos ideales elaborados por Jessop. Para ello se sostiene que las características específicas de estos tipos ideales podrían ser de gran ayuda en la ampliación del debate sobre la reestructuración económica y las reformas políticas en países como México. This article aims to identify the factors which trigger social change, and what makes such possible. The argument opens by presenting a critical analysis of rational choice institutionalism for understanding the process of change. It is immediately followed by a section which argues that the identification of immanent power in all social relations represents the core factor for explaining the open-ended social processes of change. Furthermore, since social processes entail social changes, it is recognized that the interactions among ideational, material, structural and agential elements within time and space are crucial. For, it is argued that neither political, nor economic trends determine the outcomes of processes, because public and private functions and activities can play complementary roles of one another.
